“Philosophical traditions in contemporary archaeology”

Abstract: We can identify four distinct epistemological traditions in the field of
anthropological archaeology: critical, hermeneutic, historicist, and
scientific. I will briefly discuss the nature of archaeological enquiry
in each of these four traditions and then assess the relevance of
archaeological theory-building for the social sciences in general
