In Memoriam: Walter Goldschmidt (1913-2010)

Walter Goldschmidt, Professor Emeritus of Anthropology, Psychiatry and Sociology, passed away September 1st at the age of 97.  Goldschmidt received his Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of California, Berkley in 1942.  He worked in Alaska for the Department of Agriculture (then the Bureau of Agricultural Economics) and joined the faculty of UCLA in 1946.  He was editor of American Anthropologist from 1956 to 1961, co-editor of Ethos: Journal for the Society of Psychological Anthropology and president of the American Anthropological Association from 1975 to 1976.  Goldschmidt studied the Hupa of Northern California, California farming communities and several of the tribes of East Africa before becoming a professor emeritus in the the early 80s.
